Why Hypnotherapy Sometimes Doesn't Work — And How to Make Sure It Does For You
A deeper look at how to get the most from therapy

In my practice I regularly meet people who've tried hypnotherapy before and felt let down by it. They come to me cautiously, hoping I'll be different. I understand that caution completely — therapy costs money, time and emotional energy, and when it doesn't work it can leave you feeling worse than before, as if the problem is somehow unfixable.
The truth is, hypnotherapy is a genuinely powerful approach for many people. But like any form of therapy, it doesn't always succeed — and understanding why puts you in the best possible position to make sure it works for you.
1. Motivation matters more than you think
Some clients arrive expecting to be "reprogrammed" and sent away a changed person, ideally in a single session. It doesn't work like that. Hypnotherapy isn't something done to you — it's a collaborative process that helps you understand your own motivation to change, and trains your subconscious mind to choose new, healthier ways to respond to trigger situations.
For that to work, you must truly want change for yourself. If you're attending because someone else thinks you should, or because you feel you ought to want to change without really feeling it, progress will be limited. This isn't a criticism — it's just neuroscience. The subconscious responds to genuine intent.
Before booking, ask yourself honestly: am I doing this for me?
2. Choosing the right therapist
Not all hypnotherapists work the same way. Some rely on scripts; others adapt their approach to your unique personality, history and goals. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship — the sense of comfort, trust and genuine rapport — is just as important as the technique itself.
Choose someone who listens to you, who you feel safe with, and who explains their approach clearly. Be wary of anyone who talks over you, rushes the process, or applies a one-size-fits-all script regardless of what you've told them.
Ask questions before you commit. A good therapist will welcome them.
3. Common blocks to success
Even with the best intentions, a few hidden obstacles can get in the way:
Unrealistic expectations — hypnosis isn't mind control or a magic cure. It's a focused, collaborative process that typically requires several sessions to create lasting change.
Secondary gains — sometimes, on an unconscious level, keeping a problem serves a purpose. It might provide attention, protection, or a reason to avoid something difficult. Effective therapy needs to uncover and gently resolve these patterns.
Difficulty engaging imagination — hypnosis works through imagery and focused attention. Some people need a little more support to find their own best way of responding, and a skilled therapist will work with you to find that.
Underlying issues — conditions such as untreated trauma, certain personality disorders, or active psychosis may require a broader therapeutic approach before or alongside hypnotherapy.
The wrong therapist — see point 2.
4. Technique and pacing
Hypnotherapy can also fall short when the process is too shallow, too rushed, or poorly timed. A skilled therapist knows how to pace the work, deepen the trance state progressively, and reinforce change so that it sticks beyond the session room.
5. The environment matters too
External distractions, sessions that feel rushed, or a lack of connection between what happens in the session and your daily life can all undermine progress. The follow-up matters as much as the session itself — which is why I provide practical between-session tools and check in on progress as we go.
What you can expect from me
Successful hypnotherapy isn't luck. It's the result of the right motivation meeting the right therapist and the right approach. In my practice I take the time to:
Explore your motivation and genuine readiness for change
Build a strong, safe therapeutic relationship before we begin
Tailor every session to you — never a one-size-fits-all script
Provide practical strategies so that change lasts beyond the session room
I will never take on a client if I'm not confident I can help them. If I feel that a different approach or a different practitioner would serve you better, I'll always say so.
If you'd like to explore whether hypnotherapy is the right fit for you, the best place to start is a free, no-obligation call — just a conversation, in complete confidence, about what's on your mind.
