Hypnotherapy for Sexual Performance Anxiety in Horsham

Difficulties with sex are among the more common problems people face and among the least talked about. Many people carry them alone for months or years, feeling embarrassed, shamed, frustrated or worried about what it means for their relationships. If you've found your way to this page, the first thing to know is that you're far from alone, that these difficulties are very often driven by anxiety rather than anything being wrong with you, and I have helped many people like you.

Common difficulties I help with

  • Erectile difficulties linked to anxiety or stress. Either achieving or maintaining erection

  • Premature ejaculation

  • Pornography Addiction

  • Anxiety about sex or intimacy, including worrying about how you'll perform

  • Loss of confidence after a difficult experience or a period of problems

  • Low desire linked to stress, pressure or past events

Why anxiety and sex don't mix

Sexual arousal depends on the part of your nervous system responsible for relaxation and safety. Anxiety activates the opposite system, the fight-or-flight response, which works directly against arousal. So when you start worrying about whether things will go well, your body responds as though you're under threat, and that makes difficulties more likely. After one or two experiences like this, it's easy to fall into a cycle where you begin monitoring yourself during intimacy, anticipating problems before they happen and, in doing so, making them more likely because you're not able to focus on what's important at that moment. Understanding that cycle is often a relief in itself, because it shows the problem is a pattern that can be changed rather than something permanent.

See Your GP first

Erectile difficulties can sometimes be an early sign of a physical health condition, such as heart disease or diabetes, and can also be a side effect of some medications. If you haven't already, please see your GP to rule out any physical cause. Hypnotherapy works well alongside medical treatment, and it can be particularly helpful when medication addresses the physical side but the anxiety remains.

How Hypnotherapy helps

Hypnotherapy helps break the cycle of anticipation and self-monitoring that keeps sexual anxiety going. I help you to identify what's driving the anxiety, whether that's pressure, a past experience, stress spilling over from elsewhere in life or beliefs about what sex should be like. Using hypnosis alongside techniques from CBT, NLP, RTT, Solution Focussed and Positive psychology you will calm the threat response and rebuild confidence, so that intimacy can become relaxed and enjoyable again rather than something to worry about.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to talk about things in detail? No, but the more detail you provide, the better I can tailor my approach to your experience. As a minimum, we need to understand enough to address what's driving the anxiety, and you're always in control of how much you share.

Is it confidential? Yes, everything we discuss is confidential, with a few exceptions enforced on me by my professional obligations - see my privacy policy or the NCH and CNHC websites for more details. The free consultation is a private conversation with no obligation and I am happy to explain any confidentiality questions you have during the call.

Can sessions be held online? Yes, if that's what you prefer. Many people prefer to have sessions from the privacy of their own home.

Can my partner be involved? I am not a qualified couples counsellor and so this is only allowed if relevant to your therapy and discussed on a case by case basis.

How many sessions will I need? Most people follow the 4-session programme, but we'll confirm what's right for you during your free consultation.
