Hypnotherapy to Stop Drinking Alcohol in Horsham

For many people, drinking never looks like a problem from the outside. You hold down a job, look after your family and keep up a social life, and the wine at the end of the day feels like a well-earned reward rather than something you depend on. But somewhere along the way the evening glass became two or three, the alcohol-free days became harder to string together, and the promises you make to yourself at 3am have a habit of dissolving by teatime. If that sounds familiar, you're far from alone, and it's not a sign of weakness.

Why willpower isn't enough

Alcohol changes the way your brain works. It acts on the systems that govern relaxation, reward and habit, so over time your brain learns to associate a drink with relief from stress, boredom, social awkwardness or difficult feelings. Once that connection is established, the urge to drink arrives automatically, triggered by familiar cues like getting home from work, starting to cook dinner, or just the clock striking 6pm, long before your conscious mind has a chance to argue. That's why determination on its own so often runs out, and why relapse says more about the strength of the habit than about the person trying to break it.

How hypnotherapy helps

Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious patterns that keep drinking going. Together we look in detail at your relationship with alcohol: what triggers the urge, what drinking does for you, and what it's costing you. Using clinical hypnotherapy alongside techniques from CBT and NLP, we weaken the automatic link between those triggers and reaching for a drink, and build new ways of handling the stress, tiredness and emotions that alcohol has been covering up. The aim is for life without alcohol to feel like freedom rather than deprivation.

Is it safe to stop drinking?

If you drink heavily every day, or experience shaking, sweating or anxiety when you go without, please speak to your GP before stopping. Alcohol withdrawal from heavy dependence can be medically dangerous, and a supervised detox may be needed first. Hypnotherapy works well alongside medical support, and I'm happy to work with you once you have that in place. If you would like an indication of where your relationship with alcohol is, then please try my free questionnaire.

I Understand

I used to describe myself, half-jokingly, as a high-functioning alcoholic. Never enough to be drunk, but it was there every day. I was successful at work, and the drinking was always there, until I realised how much it was taking from me. Alcohol is a time bandit, taking so much more than our health. I no longer drink, and the longer I go without it, the clearer and more settled life becomes. I couldn't help anyone else change their relationship with alcohol if I hadn't changed my own, so when you talk to me, you're talking to someone who knows exactly how that cycle feels.
