Anxiety is insidious. The signs may be hard to notice at first - a flutter in certain situations that passes quickly or a new emotional reaction that you pass off as normal. But it can be an unexpected trigger that causes it to escalate quickly and before you know it you are in a "new normal". A racing mind at 3am, a tight chest before meetings, a negative outlook, a constant sense that something is about to go wrong, or a growing habit of avoiding situations you used to handle without a second thought. Many of the people I work with are capable, successful and outwardly composed, which can make it all the harder to admit that anxiety has started running things.
Why anxiety is so hard to shift on your own
Anxiety is your body's alarm system doing its job too well. At some point your mind learned to treat certain situations, thoughts or sensations as threats, and it now responds automatically, long before your rational mind has a chance to have its say. That's why telling yourself to calm down rarely works, and why relaxation apps and breathing videos tend to take the edge off for a while without changing the pattern underneath.
How hypnotherapy helps
Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious processes that drive those automatic reactions. Alongside established techniques from CBT, NLP and EMDR, it allows us to identify what triggers your anxiety, understand what keeps it going and retrain how your mind and body respond, so that calm becomes your natural state rather than something you have to fight for.
What is a Panic Attack?
A panic attack can feel like a medical emergency; many people say it feels like a heart attack. Elevated heart rate, tight chest, hyperventilation, dizziness, muscle contractions and an overwhelming sense that something terrible is about to happen. This is all symptomatic of your body protecting itself by entering extreme fight or flight - The Amygdala fires and blood is directed to the muscles; hyperventilation causes a sharp drop in CO2 levels, which in turn causes carpopedal spasm - that feeling like your hands become like claws. It's distressing and if it happens in public can be embarrassing. Once the shock of the first panic attack is over, the hardest part becomes the fear of having another one, which can lead you to avoid places, situations and emotions that caused the attack.
Hypnotherapy helps by calming the alarm response that sets off an attack and by breaking the cycle of anticipation that keeps panic going, so that the fear loses its grip and you allow your world to open up again.
If you are having heart-related issues, it's worth getting them checked out with your GP, or if you feel that you are having a heart attack, don't hesitate and call 999.

Frequently asked questions
How many sessions will I need? Most people follow the 4-session programme, and we'll confirm what's right for you during your free consultation.
Will I be in control during hypnosis? Yes. Hypnosis is a focused, relaxed state in which you remain aware of what's happening and can speak, move or stop at any time, and nobody can make you do anything you don't want to do.
Can sessions be held online? Yes. Online sessions follow the same structure as those in person, and many people find it easier to relax in their own surroundings.
Are you qualified? I'm a fully qualified and insured clinical hypnotherapist registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).

I know anxiety from the inside
I spent thirty years in science and engineering, reaching board level, and for much of that time I was running on adrenaline, with high-functioning anxiety disguised as drive. It took a heart attack to make me stop and deal with it properly. That experience shapes the way I work with every client who comes to me with anxiety, because I know how convincing the story that you're simply busy, or just wired that way, can be.
The Anxiety Reset
My structured 4-session programme combines focused hypnotherapy tailored to you, with practical tools to use between sessions, including breathing techniques, thought reframing exercises and regular progress check-ins. Each session builds on the last, so that by the end you have a steadier baseline and the skills to maintain it yourself. The programme costs £397, with sessions available in person near Horsham or Hove, or online.
